Due to some unpleasant experiences while filming, some Hollywood actors have had some not-so-great things to say about some of their own films. Here are 10 celebs who trashed their own work:
1Jim Carreyrefused to promoteKick-Ass 2and condemned the movie’s portrayal of gun/violence.
In a tweet, Carrey wrote: I did Kickass a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience, I cannot support that level of violence..my apologies to others involved with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.”
2Instead of doing promotions for Alvin and the Chipmunks, David Cross trashed it.
While signing the first film, David Cross was told that he would have to do any sequel the studio required. However, he hated the film so much that he would tell people on late night shows to avoid seeing the film.
3Nicolas Cage hated the final cut ofDying of the Lightand launched a boycott.
The studio released a re-edited and re-scored version of the film that Niclas Cage and his entire cast were mad about. Since they had signed a non-disparagement agreement that prevented them from saying anything negative about the film, they printed the agreement on T-shirts and took it to their social media platforms to express their vexation.
4Keanu Reeves refused to promoteThe Watcher
Reeves only agreed to do a minor role in his friend’s film to felicitate funding. However his friend, Joe Charbanic ended up making Reeves’s character a much bigger role. When Reeves refused to do the film, his legal team said he didn’t have that option. Keanu ended up not attending any promotional event of the film.
5Sean Connery refused to do any interviews for theJames Bond50th anniversary DVD set.
Connery declined to appear on the box set for commentary as well as doing any promotional events tied to its release, quoting that he wasn’t coming out of retirement.
6Edward Norton had a clash with the studio hence he didn’t do any publicity for his Marvel filmThe Incredible Hulk.
Although Edward Norton was fond of his character Bruce Banner and wanted to give more depth to his alter-ego, the studio’s final cut didn’t please him enough.
7Matt Groening refused to be credited for a particular episode ofThe Simpsons
One of the episodes of season 6 called “A Star Is Burns” that featured Jay Sherman didn’t have Matt Groening’s name in opening credits. Apparently, Groening was mad at the fact that his show was being used by the producers to promote this new animation called ‘The Critic’.
8Nicole Kidman fled her home country after watching herself on screen at the premiere ofAustralia.
Kidman credited her action to anxiety as after watching herself in the film, she couldn’t connect emotionally with any of it. Right after the premiere, Kidman fled without talking to anyone about the movie.
9Terry Gilliam was barred from using Robin Williams’ name inThe Adventures of Baron Munchausento help sell the film.
Terry said “The deal was that we couldn’t use his name because his agents said, We don’t want you pimping his ass for your film. And I thought, What are you talking about?” But that was the attitude, so that’s why Robin is not credited.”
10Lindsay Lohan did zero promotional work for her movieThe Canyons.
Director Paul Schrader was disappointed when Lohan, a producer on the film, not only caused the entire shoot to be somewhat disastrous but then didn’t pitch up for promotional work or the premiere in Venice when she told him she would.
