Harrison Ford had earlier announced thatIndiana Jones and the Dial of Destinywas his final film in the franchise. While fans of the actor and the franchise were upset about this news, recent statements from Disney have another disappointing update for fans. In their statements, Disney stated thatIndian Jones 5is the ‘fifth and final’ installment in the franchise.

The studio will most likely conclude the franchise altogether, following the massive failure of the last film. The movie grossed $384 million at the box office; however, the nearly $300 million budget and $100 million marketing meant the film failed to break even.

Disney Is Done With TheIndiana JonesFranchise
After the disappointing box office numbers andHarrison Ford’s exit, Disney is no longer interested in producing more sequels in theIndiana Jonesfranchise. Ford returned for a fifth film 15 years after his earlier installment, which was also one of the forgettable outings in the franchise. Ford was joined byPhoebe Waller-BridgeandMads Mikkelsenin the fifth film.
The studio made its intention to shut down the franchise clear, referring to the film as the“final installment”in the franchise. While announcing the streaming release ofIndiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Disney+ stated in itspress release,“Lucasfilm’s ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,’ the final installment in the epic, iconic franchise…”

However, there is a possibility that theSteven Spielberg-initiated franchise might continue to tell new stories via television series rather than a theatrical release. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy alluded to this possibility while also confirming that they would not replace Harrison Ford’s central character. Kennedy told theDagobah Dispatchpodcast:
“I mean, truthfully, right now, if we were to do anything, it might be in series television down the road, but we’re not doing anything to replace Indiana Jones.”

These new television series can explore any of theIndiana Jonescharacters, like origin stories for Abner Ravenwood, Marion’s father, or the adventures of Helena Shaw. However, Lucasfilm and Disney will have to reevaluate the franchise before going forward with any further projects.

DidIndiana JonesLose Its Appeal With The Audience?
Despite receiving a lukewarm response from critics,Indiana Jones 5failed to pull in audiences to the theaters.Varietyreported that the film had lost at least $100 million for Disney. While the staggering budget of the film was the major factor in its colossal failure, the audiences were also not exactly looking forward to seeing Harrison Ford back on screen.
The film didn’t appeal to the younger generation who could not relate to a hero in his late 70s. The fact that the film comes after a disappointing fourth film also added to the less-than-stellar expectations of the audience. Interestingly, the film was released at the Cannes Film Festival prior to its theatrical release, and the word-of-mouth was just not impressive.
