Over in San Diego a little event called San Diego Comic Con is under way, and last night there was a panel for a game calledMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, an upcoming superhero game due out in the next few months. We’re sure you’ve heard of it.
During the panel there was a multitude of reveals, from a new limited edition console and controller, to a story trailer showing off more than we ever could have expected, as well as a brief and informal Q&A with the development team and some of the cast involved. To say it was a treat for all of those sat there watching is an understatement.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 isn’t the End, it’s the Beginning
Fans of Insomniac GamesMarvel Spider-Manfranchise will be well-versed in exactly what has been going on, but for those that somehow in-the-know, here’s a quick, andVERYspoiler-filled roundup. InMarvel’s Spider-Man, we meet a mid-twenties, well-established as Spider-Man Peter Parker, who has had clashes with some of his biggest foes before the opening of the game.
This isn’t an origin story, we’re simply jumping in mid-story. It worked, as fans know what happens at the start. Uncle Ben. Radioactive spider. And so on. Instead of all that, we got a web-swinging adventure filled with humour, tragedy, destruction and betrayal, with plenty of combat, stealth, gadgets and even a few puzzles thrown in for good measure. It was a blast.
Two years later in 2020, we then got the somewhat followup-come-quasi-sequelMarvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales,which featured the continuation of the story, but this time from the point of the new Spider-Man, Miles Morales. He was rough around the edges, a little unsure of himself and over all not as refined as the long-time superhero and mentor Peter, but he was doing what he could. There was a year between the first game and the sequel. Now we have the upcomingMarvel’s Spider-Man 2,but when is it? Well, it’s not far off another year forward in time, with the panel highlighting some interesting information.

During the SDCC panel the cast and development team were grilled by press and fans alike, and offered up some very carefully worded answers. When discussing the heroes as they are now, and the timeline of it all, Jacinda Chew, senior art director forMarvel’s Spider-Man 2had this to say.
“Our suit designs reflect where our heroes are… Like we said, they are about 9-10 months after the last game … they are more sophisticated.”
We’re not expecting much to have changed crime-fighting-skill-wise for Peter, who as we’ve said, was already long-established when we met him, but another nine or ten months for Miles could mean a huge difference, and potentially new abilities to boot?
When discussing the two superheroes specifically, senior narrative director Jon Paquette said.
“At the beginning of our story, our Spider-Men are at the top of their game, but both Peter Parker and Miles Morales are struggling with their personal lives. Miles is trying to find time to write his college entrance essay, but he keeps procrastinating and focusing on Spider-Work instead.
Meanwhile, Peter is underwater on payments for Aunt May’s house, but he can’t sell, it means too much to him. And just like Miles, Peter tries (and fails) to find balance with so many responsibilities. MJ wants to help Pete with the mortgage, but her job is on the line now that J. Jonah Jameson is back at the Bugle and looking to clean house. Our heroes have arrived at a confluence of crossroads, with uncertain futures, and some tough decisions ahead.”
Jon Paquette really decided to overshare here! Between Miles potentially ready for college, Peter still owning but not wanting to sell Aunt May’s house and the responsibilities that come with it, as well as J. Jonah Jameson being back at the Bugle, it seems like Insomniac’s Marvel universe has changed a huge amount since our last visit inMarvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
