According to a joint interview ofMatt Damon, Emily Blunt, and Cillian Murphy, taken by PEOPLE, Murphy’s eyes were a great distraction for his co-stars. Damon played the role of Manhattan Project director Leslie Groves and according to him:

“I remember I was up in San Francisco writing Batman Begins and there was something in the San Francisco Chronicle about 28 Days Later. I saw a picture of you with your shaved head and your crazy eyes — no offense. I remember being struck by your presence, literally from that one photograph”

As per Nolan’s wish, Murphy also screen-tested for Batman which ultimately went to Christian Bale. But theInterstellardirector was certain that the 47-year-old actor would have to be in his movie and thus he ended up with the role of Scarecrow aka Jonathan Crane.
