The Oscar-winning actor, Russell Crowe, who has been on a roll ever since his turn as a gladiator in the eponymous Ridley Scott film of 2000 was destined to be a god amidst men. With roles that each surpass his previous ones on the big screen, Crowe has relentlessly proven to be an actor as versatile and full of personality as his singularly Zeus-like beard.

However, despite the range he possessed and the powerful aura he emanated since the first time he uttered“My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius,”one of the shortcomings of growing into such newfound fame and popularity as an actor of merit is the slow build to his name and reputation and the distrust of directors to cast him in a genre drastically different than the one he had become known for.

Russell Crowe Was Rejected For Peter Jackson’sLotRTrilogy
The problem thatRussell Crowefaced due to his Oscar win and the subsequent unilateral fame that his brand bought him was reflected in what Peter Jackson deduced of the Australian actor during the formative years of what would go on to become the iconicLord of the Ringstrilogy. The man whose face suddenly became synonymous with the Gladiator and garnered a reputation that only became increasingly volatile by the day would suck the essence of a fantastical story such as theRingstrilogy dry by his star power alone.

Russell Crowe later admitted his notion of the same. But instead the theory aboutPeter Jacksonnot wanting such an immediate phenomenon on his sets, it turned out that the genius filmmaker wasn’t aware of Crowe’s identity at all:
I didn’t think Peter Jackson wanted me on that film. Because he was forced into talking to me, because there was a moment in time when everyone wanted me in everything. I am talking to him on the phone, it is like, I don’t think he even knows what I have done. I just knew that my instinct was that he had somebody else in mind, which turned out to be Viggo, and he should be allowed to hire the actor who he wants.

Years later, when asked if he ever regretted missing out on the money and royalty that came from the immortalLord of the Ringstrilogy, Crowe wittily quipped,“Never thought about it — only in situations like interviews where people are polite and kind enough to add shit up for me.”Although one is pretty sure his run asGladiatorand the subsequent filmography he built in the two decades that followed would make up for any missed opportunity along the way.
