As Hulu’s Emmy-nominated show,Only Murders in the Buildingbrings its third season, show creator John Hoffman recalls how Meryl Streep actually landed her role following a wicked plan she once offered her daughters. “She told me later, ‘I have daughters who are actresses.’” Hoffman recalled. He further discussed the plan shared by Streep to her daughters.
“If you’re having trouble with getting the work you want to be doing, just call up the show you love and tell them you’d like to be on it!” the director shared.

Discussing the plan that Streep offered her daughters to use, the acclaimed director mentioned protesting the sentiment, when the actress subtly confirmed how she used it to land her role. Further, John Hoffman revealed how he never expectedMeryl Streepto play the role of Loretta Durkin.
“I said to Dan, ‘Well, what would be dreamy for the person who never got their break, is if Meryl Streep played this.’ He’s like, ‘’Yeah, good luck with that, John.’ And then it was a matter of two weeks that Meryl was calling Marty and Steve, just to say that she likes the show,” John Hoffman shared.

During the interview withVariety,John Hoffman recalled how Meryl Streep informed him about the shocking similarity between her and Loretta’s backstory. “I say, ‘We start on your character, and you’re 10 years old, and you’re seeing your first Broadway show coming from St. Louis with your mother. You’re watching No Strings, which is a Richard Rogers musical’” Hoffman shared.
“Before I go any further, she cuts me off. She says, ‘I saw No Strings on Broadway. My mother took me when I was about 10. I’ll never forget it. Diahann Carroll was the star! She sang that beautiful song’” John Hoffman revealed.
Stunned by the revelation, the director mentioned, “I was like, ‘I gotta stop you right now because this is preposterous.’” However, realizing the unnerving connection Streep shares with her character, Hoffman found it sweet. “That was the beginning of a very faithful, lovely time with her,” the director mentioned.
