Fans of the originalWarzonehave bid a fond farewell to a game that got many through some difficult times. TheCall of Dutybattle royale launched for free in March 2020 amid the COVID pandemic, and for many who were quarantined, it was a lifeline to contact with the outside world.

Many were saddened to say goodbye to the OG map, Verdansk, in Warzone.

Fast forward three and a half years, and the OGWarzonehas finally shut down. Replaced withWarzone 2.0last year, the popular battle royale has made Activision millions during the various lockdowns, but now it was time to say our final farewells.

Warzone: A Fond Farewell to an Old Friend

No doubt many through the various lockdowns had binged their way throughTiger King,Schitt’s Creek, and various other series on subscription channels. And now they were looking for something else to occupy their time.Warzonewas that ‘something else.’

But for Activision, even it wouldn’t have comprehended how successful the battle royale game would be when it launched.

It was released to little to no fanfare at the time, understandably, but very quickly saw an explosion of players picking up the game, and looking forward, it had changed the landscape ofCall of Dutygames forever. So much so that it had become a focal point of the franchise.

The battle royale successor launched last year, but is it as good?

Upon confirming that the originalWarzonewould be shutting down in June this year, Activision had the following message for players in their statement:

“Thank you to the Call of Duty community and to our developers for making Call of Duty: Warzone an amazing place to play together.”

Goodbye, old friend. Thank you for the memories.

Fans then took to social media in huge numbers to bid farewell to what had been a loyal companion over the last 3 and a half years.

As we can see from just a handful of comments, the memories ofWarzoneduring lockdown will last a lifetime. And for many, it was a welcome escape from a time when there was so much uncertainty in the world.

So it was through tear-soaked eyes that fans said their goodbyes to the originalWarzone. But one thing we have to ask ourselves is: would the game have been as successful had the COVID-19 pandemic not hit? We’re not so sure.
