Scarlett Johansson Failed Her Les Misérables Audition
The 2012 musical dramaLes Misérablesfollows a former prisoner Jean Valjean, trying to build a new life for himself when he encounters Fantine and vows to take care of her daughter. The story follows the struggles and redemption of various characters, including Fantine, a mother, and struggling factory worker, portrayed splendidly byAnne Hathaway.
However, the role almost went to the Marvel starScarlett Johanssonas she also auditioned for the character. During an interview with Broadway.com, she revealed that she sang her heart out during the audition, but lost it as she“auditioned with laryngitis.”

“I did everything I could to, like, not have laryngitis,”she shared. However, she still missed out on the role and it eventually went toThe Princess Diarystar Anne Hathaway. Laryngitis is a flu that causes huskiness in voice and difficulty in speaking.
While she lost the role due to the huskiness in her voice, she has also said that no other actor could top Hathaway’s performance in the movie.“There’s no possible way I ever could have topped that performance [by Anne Hathaway]. It was perfect,”she stated further during the interview.
