Meryl Streephas never been afraid of speaking up about subjects that matter. Over her extensive and triumphant career, she has also suffered the effects of massive pay gaps that exist in the film industry. Despite her success and status, she has often been paid less compared to her less-successful-than-her male co-stars.

Meryl Streep, who now charges a massive 20 million dollar salary, once regretted commenting about the unequal pay culture among Hollywood actors. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she recalls,
“You know, I made one speech [about actresses being paid less than actors, at the first National Conference of the Screen Actors Guild’s Women’s Committee in 1990], and I have regretted this speech every day of my life.”

Explaining the reason behind her regret, she added,
“It’s like that’s my thing! Gawd! And then I read interviews with other actresses and they say [affecting haughty tone], ‘Oh, well, I’m not going to complain because I feel very privileged,’ and I think, oh, right. I’m not raising any banner. All I did was say in one speech what everybody knows. If the people who are making this money at the top of the profession don’t speak about it, then when will there be equity down the line?”

Despite her regret, Meryl Streep continues to be a prominent advocate for equal pay in the land of Hollywood.

When asked if she has ever been paid less than her male co-stars in an interview, Streep unhesitatingly replied,
The acclaimed actress also mentioned how women’s lack of representation in leadership is what gives root to such problems and affects decision-making. Speaking up about the lack of effort from the top of leadership, she said,
“Equal means equal. And if it starts at the top, none of these shenanigans would have filtered down and it wouldn’t have been tolerated.”
