James Wan’sAquaman and the Lost Kingdom, has been one of the most controversial films of this year for many reasons, the biggest being a certain red-haired love interest. While this has been one of the most significant topics of conversation when it comes to this film, fans of the character itself have been extremely excited for the sequel to one of the most adored films in the DC universe. Due to this, despite the negative press that the film has received, it has not overshadowed the positive, resulting in anticipation around this film building more and more as its release date comes closer.

With a film that has so much buzz around it, it is only natural that the question of whether or not another part is going to come out starts to float around. This, along with the fact, that this is the last film before the reboot of the DCEU, has made many speculate and get concerned about the future of this character. This was the exact question that Wan, the director of the film answered during a recent interview. Unfortunately, for fans of the franchise, he was extremely cryptic when delivering this news, causing speculations to go even more wild than they were before.

This Would Be Something New For James Wan

James Wanis best known for his work in some of the most iconic horror, movies of recent times, likeThe Conjuringseries,The Nunseries,Malignant,andThe Insidiousseries, having made a name for himself as an exceptionally talented director. His most recent project, yet to be released in theatres, is the second part of Jason Momoa’s iconic film,Aquaman.During a recent interview withEmpire,Wan touched on many subjects surrounding the film, including the possibility of a thirdAquamanfilm.

“I haven’t directed a third movie [in a series] before, so I’d be open to doing another [Aquaman] if I got the same freedom I’ve had on these first two.”

The director expressed are loved the idea of this, and that was not only because he would get an opportunity to continue this character storyline. He confessed that he had never directed the third film in a series. This made this possible new opportunity extremely exciting for him. He then went on to add that he would be completely open to being a part of a project such as this if he was given the same amount of creative freedom as he was given in the first two parts.

While this sounds extremely exciting for fans of the character, it is important to remember that the power to make a thirdAquamanfilm, does not lie in the hands of James Wan. The director told exactly this toEmpire,stating that the future of the entirety of the DC franchise is in the hands of James Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-CEOs of the DCU, and what they have planned for this elaborate universe.

“I’m not sure what direction [James Gunn and Peter Safran] are going in, though, so who knows? I’ve learned to never say never.”

The director confessed that he is unaware of the direction that the two are going to take this franchise so he’s not sure if a third part of this series is in the future. However, he confessed that if it were to happen, he would love to be a part of it. He then added that he would not keep his hopes up as nothing is known as of now, however, he would not completely dismiss it, as you never know when it comes to the DCEU.
