Portraying the role of a fighter pilot, the movie was seen and commented upon by an Air Force officer who complimented the director for his realism. Christopher Nolan has always had a knack for bringing the utmost realism to any project that he directs. From avoiding the usage of CGI to using an actual bomb to shoot a detonation scene, Nolan has tried and tested ways to bring about almost perfect realism in his movies.

Talking about the 2017 movieDunkirk,Tom Hardyportrayed the role of an aviator. Credited as Farrier in the credits, Hardy had several iconic scenes throughout the movie. In an interview withInsider,Air Force officer Lt. Col. Giving it a rating of 7.5/10 for its realistic portrayal of warfare, the Air Force officer had one slight complaint about the movie. The complaint was a scene regarding Tom Hardy when he had already lost an engine and decided to turn back, shoot down a plane, and then head back on his way.

“To turn around and engage a fighter [with the engine off], you’re bleeding energy. Any turns that you make, and you’re just going down quicker, so the ability to turn back shoot a guy and then turn back down the beach, it’s a little bit of a stretch. I mean, the guns work regardless so theoretically yes it is possible to shoot a guy down with the engine off.”

Nonetheless, the Air Force officer was left pretty impressed withChristopher Nolanand his promise of realism. Speaking of realism, Nolan even went as far as to base Tom Hardy’s character on a real-life World War II hero that did not receive as much acclaim as he should have.

In real life, however, Alan Deere was not captured by the enemies. Instead, after crashing on the beach, Alan Deere made his way around the place until British soldiers rescued him. According to the reports, the character of Tom Hardy was used as a depiction of the countless sacrifices that people made during the tremulous time of World War II.
