Akira Toriyama’sDragon Ball Superwas one of the most hyped-up manga in theDragon Ballseries. Recently, as a commemorative event for the 40th anniversary of the series, the Dragon Ball Super Gallery project was initiated, which features several mangakas redesigning one of the series’ volume covers until the original series’ 40th anniversary next year in November 2024.
Among all the numerous entries that showed up, one of the most distinct and stunning entries was from the creator of the world-famous mangaJujutsu Kaisen,Gege Akutami. Not only was their incredibly unique style challenging Akira Toriyama’s stylistic patterns but it also gave an exclusive outlook to the series’ characters.

Out of all 42 redraws in total received for the Dragon Ball Super Gallery project,Jujutsu Kaisencreator Gege Akutami’s was one of the most distinctive ones.
While redrawingAkira Toriyama‘s original design in his own distinctive style, Akutami took it to a whole new level. For this, they abandoned the three-by-three grid of characters originally drawn on the cover by instead drawing three main characters from the series: Gotenks, Piccolo, and Super Buu.
Following their entry, a tweet onXby Shonen Jump News, which held Akutami’s idea for the cover, went viral among fans:

Not only didGege Akutami‘s unique outlook give a Cursed Energy-esque appearance to theDragon Ballcharacters, but it also opened up a whole new portal of how those characters would have looked in a completely different light–like the one fromJujutsu Kaisen.
In comparison to this completely twisted reinvention of the cover by the Mangaka, other entries showed all the different manga creators simply redrawing Toriyama’s original designs in their own unique art styles.

Considering how much theDragon Ball Supermanga and anime fans love Gege Akutami’s cover, theJujutsu Kaisenmangaka could actually do an amazing job at creating unpredictable illustrations for the series if he collaborates with Akira Toriyama for the same.
