It seems that the infamous Martin Scorsese vs the Marvel Cinematic Universe war is brewing once again as Francis Ford Coppola joins the arena. Being a director of legendary stature much like Scorsese, Coppola joined his fellow director in dissing Marvel Studios.

With the release of Christopher Nolan’sOppenheimerand Greta Gerwig’sBarbie,fans asked Francis Ford Coppola what his thoughts on the two summer flicks were. He was quite impressed by the audience-drawing tendency the two movies had, but also went on to call Marvel movies“despicable”.

The director recently talked to his fans via Instagram. Several fans asked Coppola his thoughts on the two summer flicks making the rounds around the world, namelyBarbieandOppenheimer.Francis Ford Coppolawas all praises for the two movies since he referred to them as a“victory for Cinema”.

“I have yet to see them, but the fact that people are filling big theaters to see them and that they are neither ‘sequels’ nor ‘prequels’… no number attached to them meaning they are true one-off’s is victory for Cinema.”

In a separate interview with GQ back in 2019, the director had sided with Martin Scorsese when theShutter Islanddirector stated that the MCU wasn’t cinema.

“Martin [Scorsese] was being kind when he said it wasn’t cinema, “He didn’t say it was despicable, which is what I say. There used to be studio films. Now there are Marvel pictures. And what is a Marvel picture? A Marvel picture is one prototype movie that is made over and over and over and over and over again to look different.”

After dissing Marvel, Francis Ford Coppola ended his talks with a positive note. Seemingly referring toBarbieandOppenheimeras a sign,The Godfatherdirector believes that we are on the“verge of a golden age [for cinema]”.

Ford Coppola had nothing but praises for the two movies and how Hollywood will evolve with such flicks.

“My hunch is that we’re on the verge of a golden age. Wonderful and illuminating cinema seen in large theaters.”

The veteran director is currently busy with his upcoming magnum opus titledMegalopolis.The film is currently in post-production with no release date in sight.
