After his contract with Marvel met its end, Robert Downey Jr. quickly started preparing forDolittle, a project that first seemed like another big, fun, and potentially successful franchise. However, the actor had certain reservations about going ahead with the project way before its underwhelming reception among viewers.

During an interview with The New York Times Magazine, Downey Jr. looked back on his choice to take on the role in and produce the 2020 film, which did not fare well with its competitors at the box office and received subpar reviews.

Robert Downey Jr. Was Very Cautious About Dolittle Deal
According toRobert Downey Jr., he and his team had some reservations about the Dolittle deal, feeling that the enthusiasm was more about the agreement and less about how the project would be executed. However, he also said that after great success in MCU, he felt invincible and confident in all genre movies.
Robert Downey Jr. told theNYT:
“I had some reservations. Me and my team seemed a little too excited about the deal and not quite excited enough about the merits of the execution. But at that point I was bulletproof. I was the guru of all genre movies.”
The film featured Downey Jr. as the iconic doctor with an extraordinary ability to communicate with animals. The 2020 film is set in 19th-century England and shows Dr. John Dolittle’s journey of his emergence from seclusion to rescue ailing Queen Victoria.The actor also talked about the strain Dolittle put on his wife and producer, Susan Downey, who worked tirelessly to promote the film. It was very alarming, according to the actor.

“After that point — what’s that phrase? Never let a good crisis go to waste? — we had this reset of priorities and made some changes in who our closest business advisers were.”
Following the film, Downey Jr. and his wife shifted their focus to producing the Netflix documentary Sr., which showcases Downey Jr.’s bond with his father, who suffered from Parkinson’s Disease.

Robert Downey Jr. Wasn’t Sure About Iron Man Initially
When the big MCU opportunity came up, Robert Downey Jr. was filled with excitement. Such chances were very rare and lucrative at the same time. Reflecting on the past, he later admitted to being cautious about taking up the role initially.
He toldCinema:
“I had a feeling that I was supposed to do it. Then I thought ‘Am I wrong? Am I just convincing myself? Am I just trying to set myself up for disappointment?’ Then I thought, ‘No I think I am supposed to do this movie’.”
Robert Downey Jr. managed to solidify his position as one of the biggest stars to embrace the MCU. And rest, as they say, is history.
