Red vs Blue Finally Comes to a Close

Red vs Bluehas undergone a lot of changes over the years. Originally started in 2003 by Burnie Burns and several of his friends and coworkers as the foundation for Rooster Teeth, theHalo: Combat Evolvedmachinima series would quickly grow into a worldwide phenomenon. For five seasons, the series was subtitledThe Blood Gulch Chroniclesafter the game map it initially started on.

With Season 6, however, the series saw a drastic shift away from its purely comedic roots into a deeper Sci-Fi thriller series while borrowing somewhat liberally from the lore of the franchise it was loosely based on. Seasons 6-8 made upThe Recollection, with each season and mini-series set within it starting with “Re,”Recovery One, Reconstruction Relocated, Recreation, and finallyRevelation.) Season 8 saw the introduction of more intricate CGI fight sequences rather than just being made withHalo.

After this, the series saw a series of different writers take over. Miles Luna wroteThe Chorus Trilogyarc, which made up Seasons 11 through 13 and finished in 2015. In 2016, the series took a step back and followed an anthological format with a mix of non-canon and canon episodes written by many different writers, includingReady Player One‘s Ernest Cline.

Though Seasons 15 through 17 formed a trilogy of their own calledThe Shisno Trilogy, Joe Nicolosi stepped down from his role as writer after Season 16, passing it onto Jason Weight (with assistance from Miles Luna) for the trilogy’s concluding chapter. Season 18 sawDeath Battle‘s Torrian Crawford take the helm. TitledRed vs Blue: Zero, the season dropped most of the original cast, though this was certainlymuch to Mr. Crawford’s chagrin.

Following Season 13, the show’s reception from fans grew shakier by the year, until eventually, it went on Hiatus, with no new seasons having been released since 2020. That year, Burnie Burns left the company, followed by lead cast member and Rooster Teeth founder Joel Heyman being fired from the company for a litany of reasons.

Between losing key cast members, poor reception to recent seasons, and wide changes to the company’s content production structure, the future of the series has been a large question mark for some time now. However, with Burnie Burns and Matt Hullum, both founders of the company, returning to create one final season of the franchise, many fans will be excited to see where it will go next, and ifthe websitewill finally be updated.
