James Gunn, after becoming co-head of the DC Studios, seems to be taking the DCU into a proper and aligned storytelling cinematic universe with the movies. Comparing the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Zack Snyder’s vision, and Gunn’s reign, it seems that Gunn has learned from other’s mistakes.

Talking about it on Threads, Gunn explained to one of his fans that he was focusing more on individual stories rather than a chaotic display of overlapping characters. Subtly taking digs at the MCU, James Gunn revealed that he wants a coherent story throughout the DCU.
James Gunn Has Learned From Other’s Mistakes
Back in 2008 when the Marvel Cinematic Universe releasedIron Man,the world was delighted to see it as a stand-alone movie. With more movies slowly connecting over the years, people felt a higher connection with these superhero movies as they would often have hidden easter eggs and references to a grander universe.

WhenThe Avengerscame out in 2012, the Marvel Cinematic Universe had taken place. WithJames Gunnjoining the family in 2014 withGuardians of the Galaxy, the director had a pretty clear idea of what he didn’t want to do. Talking about how he would steer the DCU toward success, Gunn shared his idea onThreadswith a fan and stated that stand-alone movies and projects are the answer.
“If you think of anything as “investing time and effort”, no matter what shared universe, you definitely shouldn’t be! Every story should be enjoyed and worth partaking in, in an of itself, without its attachment to an outside world. If it feels like homework, screw it.”

He further continued,
“‘Shared universes’ should add fun to the individual stories, not the other way around. The individual stories and characters are much more important to me than the connections between them.”

James Gunn has indeed complained several times about not having full control of his characters when he was working for Marvel Studios.

AfterGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3was released, James Gunn revealed in an interview withRolling Stonethat Chris Hemsworth’s Thor joining Star-Lord and his team along for the ride wasn’t a part of the plan.
“They chose to have that ending in editing. And I didn’t think it was gonna be in there. ‘Endgame’ came out right after I decided to do ‘Guardians’ again. So I didn’t have much say in what was in ‘Endgame’, and then it came out, and then I was like, ‘What the f**k am I gonna do?'”
James Gunn’s DCU is currently not doing very great but all the projects released were under the influence of Zack Snyder. Fans can only hope that Gunn knows what he’s doing and will create a better DCU in the future.
