Throughout his decades-long career, Johnny Depp has played more than a few strange characters like Willy Wonka, Sweeney Todd, and Jack Sparrow. And each time, the actor went the extra mile to bring out the most authentic representation of his roles.

But unfortunately, after his 2015 crime dramaBlack Mass, alongside Joel Edgerton, Johnny Depp nearly forgot his own accent. Trying to embody something that he is not, the actor mentioned how he desires to be a completely different person while acting. Thus, this led to dialect confusion at play.

Johnny Depp’s Preparation For His Movie Roles
Famously known for his role as Jack Sparrow in Disney’sPirates of the Caribbean, Johnny Depp often pushes his limits for his performance. Apart from body transformation, Depp is known for going the extra mile for his roles. Trying to embody his film characters most authentically, the actor is even heard making permanent changes to his body.
This is indeed the level of preparation that goes intoJohnny Depp‘s movies, which is why his films often turn out to be blockbusters. But in this wild process of preparation, the actor at times loses his own personality and ends up confusing his fans and co-stars. Something similar happened after his 2015 movie.

Appearing in the crime dramaBlack Mass, Johnny Depp played the role of American mobster Whitey Bulger, alongside Joel Edgerton’s John Connolly. And apparently while preparing for the movie, Depp had one rule, that led him to have a dialect confusion after the work was completed.

Johnny Depp Almost Had a Dialect Confusion
Being originally from Kentucky, it is quite difficult to understand Johnny Depp’s ethnicity through his accent. It’s because the actor’s accent often goes from Bostonian, to Australian, to god knows what else. And apparently, this happened because of Depp’s one rule, that he follows while preparing for a movie.
During his interview withToday, alongsideJoel Edgerton, while promotingBlack Mass, the actor revealed what he wants from a role. Discussing how he wants to be completely different in his movies than his original self, the actor appears to be losing his own personality.

“The last thing I want to look like is myself. Yeah. I always felt it was important to escape. I always figured if I did the same thing over and over, I’ll not only bore myself but I’ll bore the audience. You know.”
Thus, Depp impressively transformed himself into his onscreen character. This although led him to have dialect confusion, the actor undoubtedly delivered a phenomenal performance.
