TheAvatarfranchise directed by James Cameron is one of those rare blockbusters with no existing comic book, no existing IP, or any pre-existing franchise that it feds off on. It is Cameron’s own original creation and the mastery with which he is able to deliver a narrative with cutting-edge visuals is astounding. Avatar reunited Cameron with his long-time friend and collaborator Sigourney Weaver with which he worked onAliens(1986). He also bought her back forAvatar The Way of Water(2022) even though her character dies in the firstAvatar(2009), signaling his love and comfort of working with Weaver. But maybe that comfort was the exact reason why Cameron was initially hesitant to cast her in the first place.

James Cameron Thought Casting Weaver Was Too Much of A Safe Choice

In an interview with Playboy magazine,James Cameronrecalls his decision in castingSigourney Weaverin the firstAvatar, which he acknowledges was an instinctive decision that he made. His internal desire of reuniting with someone with that he had a great working relationship over 20 years ago might have taken over him, as he recalls his initial hesitation in casting her.

As he was asked about reuniting with Weaver, Cameron recalls,

Sigourney Weaver voices Kiri in Avatar The Way Of Water

“She was my safest casting choice to play the botanist, which is why I didn’t want to cast her. I woke up one day and said, Don’t be a dumb shit; she’ll be perfect. Sig is worthy of awe, but she’s also goofy, funny, deeply committed to acting, wicked smart and really sweet. There’s no gun porn around her character in this film like there was for Ripley in Aliens”

He later assured himself that the right call was made as everyone who was cast, perfectly suited their respective roles. Weaver who played a botanist in the film, also played her part well as Cameron states that she understood the assignment and organically got along well together.
