While things haven’t been exactly bright for the MCU in recent years, especially in the TV landscape, with their entire TV model getting an overhaul, they did get things right withLoki. Not only did the second season live up to its predecessors but also succeeded in giving Tom Hiddleston’s Loki a glorious conclusion, which has been deemed among MCU’s top moments.

And for the finale of the season, instead of being limited to the confinements of Marvel comics, they referred to the real Norse mythology for the character, turning Loki into the God of stories.

Loki’s Finale Was Inspired by the Real Mythology

The ending ofLokiSeason 2 witnessesTom Hiddleston‘s God of Mischief taking the throne at the Citadel at the End of Time, transforming the temporal loom into a multiverse tree, resembling the Yggdrasil. Reflecting on the ending that witnesses Loki becoming the God of everyone’s stories, holding the branched timelines for all of eternity, the creators explained they were inspired by real mythology. During their appearance on thePhase Zeropodcast, the filmmaking duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Scott Moorhead explained,

“One of the early days’ discussions about how we’re going to be treating the entire final episode, especially the last half of the final episode, we were actually looking at the Wikipedia for Loki – not the comic book character but the actual god – and he was the God of Stories.”Moorhead said. “I wouldn’t even say the god of time – I would say he’s the god of everyone’s story, and he’s a librarian that protects it and allows it to flourish.”

This Might Be the End of Tom Hiddleston in the MCU

While the big multiversal showdown is gradually approaching, it seems that we might not get to see another glimpse of the God of stories in the MCU moving forward. WithLokiseason 2 tying up all loose ends, Tom Hiddleston explained that it perfectly concludes his 14-year-long journey in the MCU, implying that this might be the end for him in the MCU.
